This book is part of the Canada in World War I series and examines the causes of the conflict. The book explains the background to the beginning of World War I and covers the political situation in Europe in 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the arms race, the role of nationalism and imperialism, the alliances of the European powers, and features maps, charts, statistics and a series of profiles of leaders of the Allies and the Central Powers.
